Shouptik Basu: A Comprehensive Resource for Surgical Oncology and Clinical Decision-Making

Shouptik Basu, Surgical Oncologist at Department of GI-HPB Surgery at Tata Medical Center, Kolkata, shared on LinkedIn:

“Principles of Cancer Surgery: Evidence-Based Algorithms for Surgical Decision Making is conceived as a comprehensive, curriculum-based resource for Surgical Oncology residents, fellowship trainees, examination aspirants and young surgeons.

Spanning nearly 1,400 pages across two volumes, the book brings together the complete spectrum of contemporary Surgical Oncology in a single, systematically organised reference. It is structured around 14 disease management group-specific sections, covering the major domains of cancer surgery, complemented by dedicated sections on Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Molecular Biology, Palliative Care and other allied disciplines in oncology.

The content has been comprehensively updated with landmark clinical trials, contemporary international guidelines, emerging evidence and clinically relevant advances through 2026. In addition, the accompanying e-chapters are designed to maintain continuity with evolving evidence, with landmark trials and important updates being periodically revised.

More than a conventional textbook, Principles of Cancer Surgery is designed as an integrated learning and examination resource. It combines evidence-based algorithms, clinical decision pathways, staging systems, landmark trials, operative principles, treatment strategies, high-yield concepts and examination-focused content to provide a structured approach to learning and clinical decision-making.

The learning experience extends beyond the printed page, with 80+ videos and more than 9 hours of lectures and operative content, integrating multimedia education with comprehensive print-based learning.

The book features forewords by Chia Shuhyn Claramae, Clinical Associate Professor, National Cancer Centre Singapore, and Rishikesh Parmeshwar, Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon, UK, bringing an international perspective to a textbook conceived around the educational needs of Surgical Oncology trainees.

With its combination of curriculum-based learning, evidence-based algorithms, landmark trials, operative principles and examination-oriented content, Principles of Cancer Surgery aims to provide a comprehensive foundation for Surgical Oncology training and preparation for national and international fellowship examinations, including FEBS.

The author, Dr. Shouptik Basu, is a Consultant Surgical Oncologist from Kolkata, India, with clinical interests spanning gastrointestinal, hepatopancreatobiliary, thoracic and peritoneal surface oncology.

Importantly, the book is presented as the first curriculum-based Surgical Oncology textbook from India, developed specifically around the structured learning requirements of Surgical Oncology trainees and the evolving demands of contemporary cancer surgery.

The book will be available shortly through the publisher’s website and Amazon.”
