“Sometimes we see patients with suspected pancreatic cancer before they have even had their biopsy. This may seem very controversial in the oncology space.
Why do we do this though?
Because in pancreatic cancer, time matters.
In Birmingham, our patients are cared for by consultants who specialise specifically in pancreatic and liver cancers. We aim to see people quickly and, where appropriate, become involved while the diagnosis is still being established.
That means we can think about the whole pathway from the outset: diagnosis, molecular testing, treatment and clinical trials.
Alongside standard care, we are building a growing portfolio of trials involving RAS – targeted therapies, cancer vaccines and other new treatments.
For me, this is what a specialist pancreatic cancer service should look like.
