Shernan Holtan: Reflecting on Meaningful Change in Our alloHCT Program

Shernan Holtan, Chief of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Professor of Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

>90% 1 year OS, 1% NRM, while nearly doubling volumes and reducing cost. It’s truly a new era in alloHCT!

I never thought I’d see statistics like this during my career.

Thank you sincerely to Drs. Renier Brentjens, Marco Davila, and Brian Betts for creating the right environment for clinical innovation.

Thank you to Drs. Megan M. Herr and Kanwal Mallhi for being amazing partners in leading the clinical programs and helping to dream of a big future!

Thank you to Trish Boersch, Lora Yoerg and Erin Hughes for doing mountains of paperwork to make this all possible prior to our Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) reaccreditation.

Thank you to our amazing coordinators who leaned into telemedicine with me and dramatically changed workflows with the NMDP to get patients transplanted so much faster.

Thank you to the Leukemia team Eunice S. Wang, Elizabeth Griffiths, J Thompson, Steven Green, and Pamela Sung for your excellent pre – transplant care of the patients and for accepting them back at day +60 or earlier of if maintenance therapy is even more urgent.

Thank you to Steve Schinnagel for helping us obtain the resources we needed and always keeping the trains running on time.

Most of all, a huge thank you to Molly Aungst working with Tina Glow, Laura Markel, Renee DeWald, Melinda Klubek, Jordan Pleskow, Umesh Yogarajah, PharmD, BCOP, Ilana Cypes, all of nursing supervison, and our amazing team of APPs, RNs, and hospitalists to make Early Discharge Clinic and direct readmits happen! This was a massive practice change, and you got it done in record time, always keeping patient comfort and safety
your top priorities.

This was not always easy or fun. Many hard conversations. Many sleepless nights wondering if we were making the right calls.

I’m proud to show the world what we accomplished together. I’m proud of you!

Celebrate this moment. This is a big W for our team at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center!”
