St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital shared a post on LinkedIn:

“During National Mentoring Month, St. Jude is proud to recognize Shannon McKinney-Freeman, PhD, as the 2025 Postdoctoral Association Mentor of the Year. This honor reflects McKinney-Freeman’s commitment to fostering the growth and success of postdoctoral researchers at St. Jude.

Nominated by four mentees, McKinney-Freeman is celebrated for a thoughtful approach to mentorship. Her mentees noted her consistent support, intellectual leadership and investment in the development of those she mentors. This approach prepares mentees for the diverse challenges and opportunities of scientific careers.

‘One of the most unique aspects of Shannon’s mentorship is her intentional effort to involve trainees in the academic and professional dimensions of science beyond the bench,’ said Yuanyuan Huang, PhD, a postdoc in the McKinney-Freeman Lab.

McKinney-Freeman’s efforts help ensure that St. Jude remains a place where emerging scientists are empowered to excel and her leadership extends beyond the lab. She hosts the Danny Thomas Lecture Series and is recognized as an expert in hematopoietic stem cell biology and sickle cell disease.

Congratulations, Dr. McKinney-Freeman, on this well-deserved recognition and your contributions to the St. Jude mission.”

Shannon McKinney-Freeman, Member at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, shared this post, adding:

“No greater honor as a mentor than to be nominated for something like this by your own trainees. Thank you, everyone!”
