Shane Jacobson: Why the Work We Do in the Fight Against Cancer Matters so Much

Shane Jacobson, Chief Executive Officer at American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Yesterday was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. One of the most beautiful and inspiring examples of why the work we do in the fight against cancer matters so much.

I started the day in the halls of Congress for Cancer Lobby Day with hundreds of passionate volunteers from every corner of the country. Each one using their voice – and carrying the voices of their communities – to move forward policy that ensures better cancer care is a reality. To every American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) volunteer who made the trek to speak to their Congress members and stand up for critical advancements in cancer care: THANK YOU.

And I ended the day with something truly extraordinary. The 15th annual Lights of Hope ceremony (celebrated by 85,000 people nationwide) at the National Mall to honor and remember loved ones impacted by cancer. Thousands of glowing bags circled the reflecting pool, each decorated with a name, a drawing, a special note, a story. A visual reminder that we truly shine brighter when we work together.

I’m so humbled to be here and to bear witness to such powerful moments that capture WHY we advocate for policy change and legislative and regulatory solutions that reduce the cancer burden.”
