“CardioOncology is deeply personal to me.
My journey began in 2014, when I attended the Anderson Cardio – Oncology Summit as a curious learner and met some of the pioneers who helped build this field.
Among them was Dr. Steven Lipshultz, whose passing this year has been especially saddening.
I have never forgotten the inspiration I took home from that meeting – and I have never looked back.
I am grateful to Drs. Ana Barac, Anju Nohria, Daniel Lenihan, Michael Fradley, Tomas Neilan, Joerg Herrmann, and so many others for their mentorship, partnerships, and the opportunities they have opened along the way.
From training under Dr. Nohria at Dana – Farber Brigham to founding and growing a high – volume cardio – oncology program at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center over nearly a decade, this has always been a shared journey.
Contributing to studies and publications that advance patient care – and chairing the American College of Cardiology’s cardio-oncology clinical guidance alongside Dr. Barac – have been meaningful milestones.
None of this would have been possible without my mentors, colleagues, and trainees whose curiosity, hard work, and commitment continue to inspire me.
Over time, my focus has evolved toward cardio – onco – metabolics: understanding how cardiovascular, cancer, and metabolic health intersect, and how those connections can guide prevention.
As I prepare for GC – OS 2026 in Williamsburg, I am reflecting on that journey – and looking ahead.
In the session ‘Getting to the Heart of the Matter: What Is the Future of Cardioprotection for Patients with Cancer?‘, I’ll discuss the role of SGLT2 inhibitors and a question central to our field:
How can we protect the heart before injury occurs?
We’ll explore:
- The potential of SGLT2 inhibitors to prevent cancer therapy – related cardiac dysfunction.
- How cardiometabolic health can inform earlier, individualized cardioprotection.
- What the evidence tells us, what remains uncertain, and what we need from ongoing trials.
For anyone hoping to make an impact in cardio – oncology – or any field – keep showing up. Keep learning, work hard, and seek people who challenge and support you. Meaningful work takes time, and progress is not always immediately visible. Over the years, those efforts can grow into something that matters.
