“This is a ‘pinch yourself’ moment in cancer research. In an academic partnership with Moderna, Oxford Cancer scientists – led by the brilliant Professor David Church – have co-designed a vaccine to prevent cancers occurring in those with the inherited cancer predisposition ‘Lynch‘ syndrome.
Until now, those with Lynch have watched family members die from seemingly unstoppable cancers, knowing they too faced a similar future.
Provided the study is successful, this off-the-shelf vaccine could one day offer them a cancer-free future. The project has benefitted from the strong advocacy of people like Bep Sandhu who have firsthand experience of Lynch.
This is what our precision prevention trials look like: life changing research co-evolved with the public, scientists and commercial partners. Well done to all those involved, to Cancer Research UK (CRUK) for supporting the project from the ground up, to Moderna, to the University of Oxford and OCTO (our trials unit) but most importantly to the Lynch community.
