Santiago Fontes: Physical Activity Is Now an Evidence-Based Intervention in Colon Cancer Care

Santiago Fontes, Medical Oncologist, Immuno-Oncology Specialist, shared a post on LinkedIn:

ESMO GI 2026 has just kicked off in Munich.

The key takeaway message from Jeffrey Meyerhardt‘s opening presentation stood out:

‘Talk to your patient about being physically active.’

The CHALLENGE trial has changed how we think about exercise in colon cancer. Physical activity is no longer just supportive care – it is an evidence-based intervention that can improve disease-free and overall survival in eligible patients after treatment.

As oncologists, we prescribe surgery, chemotherapy, and surveillance. We should also prescribe the conversation about physical activity.

Sometimes, the simplest advice can make a lasting difference.”
