Samra Turajlić and Jonathan Lim: A Major Step Forward for Manchester Cancer Research

Cancer Research UK is expanding its footprint in Manchester with a major financial boost. The organization is increasing its annual investment in the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute by £6 million, raising total core funding to £17 million per year. This funding uplift will support institutional growth by creating eight new senior research roles-including group leaders and clinician scientists-alongside 80 to 100 laboratory jobs. The expansion will focus on accelerating work in immunology, data science, and artificial intelligence.

Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute:

“Major funding news! Cancer Research UK (CRUK) is investing an additional £6m a year in our Institute’s annual funding, a more than 50% increase!

This new funding will create up to 100 new jobs at our Institute and allow us to procure and develop cutting-edge technologies for our already powerful core facilities.

We’re starting this expansion right now, with immediate recruitment commencing for leaders of three new research groups at our Institute:

  • Computational Biology and AI
  • Immunology
  • Clinician Scientist

The next couple of years are going to see a massive expansion in Manchester’s cancer research power as our Institute grows and and we embark on new collaborations with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, The University of Manchester’s Division of Cancer Sciences and the Cancer Research UK National Biomarker Centre under the umbrella of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre.

These rich partnerships enable all of our work.

Most importantly, thank you to the supporters of Cancer Research UK (CRUK), whose donations fund the life-saving discoveries made through our research.

Check out what this boost in funding means to our Director, Samra Turajlić, and find our open vacancies right here.”

Manchester Cancer Research Centre added:

“Big news for cancer research in Manchester.

Cancer Research UK is increasing its annual investment in the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute from £11m to more than £17m this year – a major boost that puts Manchester at the heart of cancer discovery and innovation.”

Jonathan Lim, Lead of the The Christie International Fellowship Programme for Medical Oncology at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Lead of the RISE Consortium at RISE Manchester, welcomed the expansion, highlighting the importance of strengthening collaborative research across Manchester’s oncology ecosystem. He emphasized the opportunity to further integrate immunology, cell therapy, and data-driven approaches to accelerate translation from discovery science to patient impact.

Team Manchester is growing.

Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute will be receiving an extra £6m a year in investment, creating senior research roles: 4 group leaders, 2 senior group leaders and 2 clinician scientists.

Building on strengths in immunology (including if you have interests in immunotherapy and cell therapy!), and expanding into data science and AI. Come join us!”

Cancer Research UK Science and Innovation:

“Eight senior research roles to be created at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute

We’re delighted to announce we’re increasing our annual investment into our Manchester Institute by £6m, bringing core funding to around £17m a year.

This uplift will support the creation of:

  • four group leader positions
  • two senior group leader positions
  • 80-100 additional jobs once labs are fully established

These new research teams will build on strengths in immunology, while expanding into data science and AI.

The funding boost will also enable the appointment of two clinician scientist roles in partnership with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. These roles will speed up translation of research into real-world patient benefit, bringing together:

  • world-leading discovery science
  • clinical expertise
  • rich patient and population data

Through this investment we’re strengthening the institute as a leading centre for interdisciplinary cancer research and driving progress for people affected by cancer.
