Samra Turajlić, Director at CRUK Manchester Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It was a privilege to attend the celebration of 125 years of Cancer Research UK (CRUK) at St James’s Palace, where Michelle Mitchell OBE delivered an inspiring speech about CRUK’s remarkable impact over more than a century.
The celebration prompted me to reflect on how fortunate we are to have Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and and all its supporters. As a budding clinician scientist, I was awarded a CRUK Clinician Scientist Fellowship, followed by an Advanced Fellowship. Those fellowships shaped my career and gave me the opportunity to experience first-hand the extraordinary research environment that CRUK has built and sustained.
During that journey, I was a postdoctoral researcher at the CRUK London Research Institute, which would later become part of the The Francis Crick Institute, another flagship institute with deep CRUK roots. I later became a Group Leader at the Crick with an independent research programme. Today, I have the privilege of serving as Director of the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute.
Throughout this journey, I have been continually amazed by the breadth of scientific talent and the spectrum of research that CRUK supports – from fundamental discovery science to translational and clinical research, all united by the goal of improving outcomes for people affected by cancer.
Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has not only transformed our understanding of cancer but has also nurtured generations of scientists and clinician scientists, enabling careers and discoveries that would not otherwise have been possible.
Happy 125th anniversary, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and congratulations to everyone who has contributed to this extraordinary legacy- supporters, patients and researchers alike.”
