“I had a conversation with a very talented person who was going through a rough patch in their career, and she asked me how I had a career that had gone so smoothly.
I laughed aloud. ‘Don’t believe anyone’s bios,’ I told her.
Because everyone has rough – sandpaper rough – patches.
Everyone.
And then I told her about some of mine.
- Times when I made big mistakes.
- Times when I misread the room.
- Times when I thought I might be promoted and I wasn’t.
- Times when everything started to go wrong.
- The times when I learned life isn’t fair, but is mostly good.
The key isn’t to avoid failure, but to learn the right lessons when it inevitably comes.
And she was shocked.
Because we don’t often talk about the bad times, the hard times, the rough times.
Far from it.
We have Instagram and LinkedIn, perfect existences where everything is fine all the time.
It’s not.
And the faster we acknowledge and recognize that (and adopt a growth mindset), the more likely we are to each reach our full potential.”
