Sachin Jain: Palliative Care and Systemic Change with Diane Meier

Sachin H. Jain, President and CEO, Board Director at SCAN Health Plan, shared on LinkedIn:

“I was honored to share the stage Monday at the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) Seminar with Diane E. Meier, a true hero in American medicine.

Diane and I first met in the early days of health reform at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and we have had a professional friendship ever since.

She is one of the pioneers of the palliative care field and is singularly responsible for diffusing its practices and principles across the medical profession.

Our moderator, CAPC CEO Brynn Bowman, told me that some people call her the Lady Gaga of Palliative Care.

I believe it.

She is the closest thing we have to a palliative care ՛rock star՛ and was even a named MacArthur Foundation Genius.

Diane and I had a spirited conversation about a number of topics:

  • the ՛value based care՛ delusion
  • the often dangerous collision of for-profit motives and patient care
  • the lonely nature of change leadership
  • and the skills and mindset needed to persist in the face of challenge and systemic obstinacy.

It was a wonderful exchange.

We didn’t agree on everything but we did align on the fact that we can’t normalize the abnormal.

We need clinicians who work as advocates for change.

And we need to accept that things won’t get better unless we admit that they are badly broken.

Absent that, we are all complicit in a broken status quo.”
