Sachin H Jain, President and CEO, Board Director at SCAN Health Plan, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”At SCAN, we talk incessantly about not ‘normalizing the abnormal.’
What do you do when an entire industry has ‘normalized the abnormal’?
- Excessive prior authorization for necessary (life saving or life sustaining) medicines and procedures.
- Talking with soulless robots as a substitute for humans in moments of personal crisis.
- Giving people the run-around in moments when they most need our clarity and care.
Some will say these are necessary tools to manage affordability and access. And will hide behind stale industry talking points. But is it necessary for us to strip our soul, humanity, and compassion from our work?
We are about to find out. Because SCAN is naming the problem (and including ourselves as part of it) – and declaring that we can and will be better.
And anyone who has made any big change in their life knows – it all begins with ending the denial – and saying out loud, ‘Houston, we have a problem.’ A big one.
So proud of the team we lead at SCAN for departing from our industry’s standard toxic positivity and acknowledging not only that we have a problem, but putting ourselves on the hook for being part of the solution.
Take a watch, let us know what you think; and if you like it, please share it!”
