Ryan Schoenfeld: How Stigma and Structural Gaps Allow Early-Onset Cancers to Go Undetected Far too Long

Ryan Schoenfeld, Chief Executive Officer at The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research, shared a post on LinkedIn:

NPR recently brought attention to an issue that doesn’t get enough focus – how stigma and structural gaps allow early-onset cancers, like colorectal cancer, to go undetected far too long. It’s now the leading cause of cancer death among men under 50, a sobering statistic we can’t ignore.

This challenge strikes close to home, and addressing it means accelerating research that reflects today’s realities – not decades-old data. It’s one of the many reasons we’ve partnered with the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR) to jointly host a global conference in November focused on advancing our understanding of the biology, causes, and early detection of these rising cancers.

As we prepare to convene experts and patient advocates, our goal is to develop a research agenda that better aligns with patient experiences and ensures early-stage cancers are caught sooner to save lives. While we’re just beginning to understand the scope and urgency of this trend, but together, through collaboration and innovation, we can make meaningful progress.”
