Ruzanna Papyan: Addressing Gaps in AYA Oncology at ASCO 2026

Ruzanna Papyan, Chief of Pediatric Oncology Department at PCBDC of Armenia, Clinical Research Physician at Immune Oncology Research Institute, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“At ASCO 2026, the session ‘Unique Challenges in Sarcoma Care for Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs)‘ was an important reminder that AYAs remain one of the most underserved groups in oncology.

The session highlighted several critical issues that directly influence outcomes and quality of life for young people with sarcoma:

  •  The persistent gap in clinical trial enrollment among AYA patients and the need for age-inclusive research strategies – presented by Nita Louse Saibel
  • The growing recognition of genetic predisposition syndromes and the importance of integrating genetics across the entire care continuum-from diagnosis to survivorship – presented by Anita Villani
  • The value of early palliative care involvement, not only for symptom management but also for improving overall patient and family outcomes – presented by Ursula Sansom-Daly
  • The unique psychosocial, educational, and developmental challenges faced by AYAs that extend far beyond cancer treatment itself — presented by Courtney Fullbright

Most importantly, the session reinforced a message that many of us in the AYA community have been advocating for years: AYA cancer care is not simply pediatric oncology or adult oncology – it requires dedicated, age-appropriate, multidisciplinary models of care.”
