The Lisbon Manifesto on Precision Cancer Education: A Call to Transform Cancer Education from Personalized Prevention to Personalized Care.
Working and teaching in the field of Precision Medicine and Pharmacogenomics for more than 25 years, I was honored to participate in the EACE 37th Annual Scientific Meeting from the European Association of Cancer Education. As a result, the main conclusions were just published at The Journal of Cancer Education. From our pioneering days 25 years ago to the current tsunami of activity, these conclusions may be of help and for reflection to all our colleagues in the field. To note the Joint Action Personalized Cancer Medicine (JA PCM) aiming to extend access to and knowledge of PCM in Europe.
The Lisbon Manifesto on Precision Cancer Education Main Conclusions:
- The future of oncology will not be determined solely by breakthroughs in molecular biology, artificial intelligence, or drug development. It will also be determined by our ability to educate and share our knowledge with others in an effective way.
- The credibility of the messenger also emerges as a key element: educators with the right skills and adequate background.
- The discussions emerging from the EACE Lisbon Meeting demonstrate that the next frontier of precision medicine is precision education.
If precision oncology seeks to deliver the right treatment to the right patient at the right time, then precision cancer education must strive to deliver the right knowledge, to the right person, in the right way, at the right moment. This is our major challenge and also our major opportunity.”
