“Greece Moving Against Cancer – 10th Hellenic Cancer Federation | ELLOK Conference- HPV and Cancer: The European Approach
I was truly honored to be invited as a keynote speaker at the 10th ELLOK Hellenic Cancer Federation Annual Conference, ‘People at the Centre – Bridging Pathways of Care,’ culminating on February 4th in recognition of World Cancer Day. During the session ‘Public Health and Cancer – Challenges, Innovations and Solutions,’ I delivered a lecture on ‘HPV and Cancer: The European Approach – Highlighting European strategies to prevent HPV‑related cancers through vaccination, screening, and public health policy.’
Aligned with the goals of both the World Health Organization and the European Union, Portugal’s experience is well positioned to lead Europe’s efforts to address and ultimately eliminate HPV‑related diseases and cancers as a public health priority. Achieving this vision requires the reinforcement of a comprehensive and sustainable strategy grounded in four pillars: vaccination, screening, treatment, and health literacy. After 30 years working in this field, it was a privilege to share our experience and perspectives.
It was equally enriching to engage with key voices from the Greek and European cancer and health community, alongside my colleagues at the session’s roundtable: Christina‑Maria Kravvari, Theodoros Agorastos, Georgia Kourlaba, Menia Koukougianni, Despina Topali, Dimitris Bourlivas, Maria Theodoridou, and our moderator Theodora Psaltopoulou. A special note of appreciation goes to Christina-Maria Kravvari, Secretary General for Public Health of the Greek Ministry of Health—her clear vision and impressive background make her a future leader to follow closely.
My warm congratulations to George Kapetanakis, President of ELLOK, and to Marina Ximeri, Head of Policy and National Cancer Mission Hub Coordinator, whose leadership and dedication—together with the outstanding ELLOK team—resulted in an event of the highest quality, rich in insight and impact.
It was also a pleasure to see and hear from colleagues and friends including Hugo R. Soares, Nicolas Philippou, Prof. Andreas Charalambous, Nikolina Dodlek, Matti Aapro, Alberto Costa, Joao Breda, and Christos Tsagkaris.
The atmosphere in Athens was filled with positive energy and a shared commitment to advancing the fight against cancer. In Science we trust. In people we believe.”
