Ronald Chen: Physicians Get Cancer Too

Ronald Chen, Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Physicians get cancer too.

I’ve treated quite a few physicians for prostate cancer and it’s always a unique experience treating someone who’s essentially a colleague – someone who has their own background and experience in oncology or another medical specialty.

I approach them just as I would any other patient. I provide them the same kind of education and knowledge around prostate cancer, treatment options, side effects and prognosis.

And it’s made me think about my own possibility of getting cancer in the future.

Just because I’m an expert in prostate cancer doesn’t mean I’m immune to it. I take all the same precautions and screenings for myself that I recommend to men.

Early detection is key.

Prostate cancer screenings should start at age 50. Men who are at a higher risk for prostate cancer – men with a family history or black men – screenings start should start at 40-45.”
