Ronald Chen: Exploring the Link Between Obesity and Cancer at The University of Kansas Cancer Center

Ronald Chen, Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Approximately 18.6 million people in the United States (and millions more worldwide) are living with, through and beyond cancer according to the American Association for Cancer Research.

An incredible number, thanks to the advances made by research over the years.

May is National Cancer Research Month, a time to recognize the importance of lifesaving research being done across the country.

Here at home, at The University of Kansas Cancer Center, we are leading research that’s digging into the connections between obesity and cancer.

Obesity is likely to become the number one cause of cancer in the future, overtaking smoking, which is why we’re dedicated to researching it more. We must better understand why and how obesity causes multiple different cancers, and how to effectively reverse this trend.

Across our cancer center, we’re examining obesity from many angles — from molecular pathways that influence tumor growth to designing community-based prevention programs.

Our research is focused on two key aspects:

  • Identifying what drives obesity and obesity‑related cancer risk
  • Developing interventions that improve metabolic health and cancer outcomes

This is the first research program dedicated to obesity and metabolic health in any National Cancer Institute-Designated cancer center in the country!

The continued research we’re doing at The University of Kansas Cancer Center will lead to not only discoveries, but many lives saved.”
