Ron DePinho: Exercise Increasingly Recognized as More Than Supportive Care in Oncology

Ron DePinho, Professor and Past President of MD Anderson Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Mark A. Febbraio et al, published in Cancer Cell:

“Exercise is Medicine.

Exercise is increasingly recognized as more than supportive care in oncology. It is a biologically active intervention with the potential to influence tumor progression, treatment response, and survival.

This Cancer Cell commentary highlights growing evidence that physical activity modulates systemic metabolism, immune function, inflammation, and tumor perfusion, creating conditions that can suppress cancer growth and enhance therapy efficacy.

The next challenge is translation: defining molecular mediators, developing predictive biomarkers, and designing rigorously controlled trials to enable precision exercise prescriptions.

Moving exercise from ‘wellness advice’ to evidence-based cancer therapy will require the same scientific discipline we apply to drugs—but the therapeutic upside may be substantial.”
