Robert A. Harrington: It’s Time to Bring Clinical Practice and Clinical Research Back Together

Robert A. Harrington, Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean at Weill Cornell Medicine and Provost for Medical Affairs at Cornell University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“One of my priorities for this year is encouraging all our clinicians to think more deeply about clinical research. For too long, clinical practice and clinical research have been treated as separate domains. I believe it’s time to bring them back together.

In medicine, there are only two doctors who should answer a question: either the answer is known, and we should move forward with a plan, or the answer is not known. In that case, we should study it. Even simple questions, such as the best IV fluid for critically ill patients, deserve rigorous study in practice.

I consider myself a clinical-scientist and have a vision for the years ahead to instill this type of bench-to-bedside mindset in all areas of patient care.”
