Rob Winn: Potential of Scalable Digital Health Interventions to Improve Outcomes Beyond Active Treatment

Rob Winn, Director at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

New data presented at SABCS25 highlight the potential of scalable digital health interventions to improve outcomes beyond active treatment.

In a multicenter randomized clinical trial, the YES mobile health tool, guided by electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs), significantly improved general and cancer-specific quality of life for adolescent and young adult breast cancer survivors. Notably, participants also experienced meaningful improvements in vaginal and arm symptoms, common and often under-addressed survivorship concerns.

What stands out is that this was a low-touch, self-managed intervention, not directly embedded within the care team, challenging traditional assumptions about how survivorship support must be delivered.

As breast cancer incidence continues to rise among women ages 15–39, these findings underscore an important opportunity:
How can we leverage digital tools to deliver patient-centered, equitable, and scalable survivorship care, particularly for young adults and those with limited access to in-person resources?

This work invites deeper conversation around implementation, sustainability, and integration into evidence-based cancer care.”
