Rob Winn: The NIH’s 15% Indirect Cost Cap – A Misunderstanding of Research Reality
Rob Winn, Director at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared on LinkedIn: about a recent paper by Jennifer W. Pegher published on ASCO Post:
“The proposed NIH cap of 15% on indirect costs is not just a budget cut; it is a misunderstanding of what makes research possible.
Indirect costs are not ‘extras.’ They are the electricity in the lab, the tissue banks, the data security, and the staff who ensure safety and compliance. Without them, cancer research cannot happen.
Thankfully, a federal injunction has blocked this cap. But the threat is clear: cancer research requires precision, a scalpel, not a chainsaw.

We must continue to advocate for steady, predictable funding. Lives depend on it.”
