Rob Winn: Sometimes, Healing Comes with a Melody
Rob Winn, Director of VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Sometimes, healing comes with a melody.
After 27 days in the hospital recovering from a lifesaving bone marrow transplant, Michael Stigall didn’t just walk out; he played his way out, performing an original song he wrote during treatment called ‘My DNA.’
His journey began with an unexpected leukemia diagnosis, led to multiple rounds of chemotherapy, and brought him to Massey for a transplant from a 19-year-old donor in Europe, whom Michael now calls ‘Ethan.’
Watching Michael sing to the people who cared for him, his family, our care team, and even law enforcement officers who stood by his side, was a reminder of why we do this work. The science saves lives, but it’s the human connection that gives those lives meaning.
Michael’s music is now part of our story at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, a story of resilience, gratitude, and hope.
Thank you, Michael, for letting us be part of your song.”
