Rob Pieters, Chief Medical Officer at the Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology and Professor of Pediatric Oncology at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands shared Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology’s post on LinkedIn, adding:
“Good news! 5-year and 10-year survival for Dutch children with cancer diagnosed in 2010-2014 has improved to 85% and 83% respectively.
And the most recent for children diagnosed in 2015-2019 are even better again: 87% 5-year survival !!!!!”
Quoting Princess Maxima Center for Pediatric Oncology’s post:
“We start this Month of Childhood Cancer with special news: more and more children with cancer are cured. Meanwhile, 83% of children are still alive ten years after their diagnosis, this was 77%.
This is due to better diagnostics and increasingly effective treatments, made possible by advances in scientific research. Progress in scientific research is only possible thanks to the continued financial support of various partners. We are grateful to Stichting Kinderen Kankervrij (KiKa), our Princess Máxima Center Foundation and the many other partners for that support.
Although the better survival rates are encouraging, one in six children with cancer still do not survive their disease. That is why we must continue to invest in research and innovative healthcare solutions.
In addition, research into reducing side effects during treatment and in the long term also remains of the utmost importance, because a child with cancer already takes so much. We are drawing extra attention to this this Month of Childhood Cancer, so that we can continue to take steps towards our mission in the future: to cure every child with cancer, with optimal quality of life.”
