Rob Butcher, President, CEO, Board of Directors at Swim Across America, Inc, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Four decades ago, the cancer treatment toolbox was limited: Surgery. Radiation. Chemotherapy.
In the 1980s and 1990s, a growing group of innovative oncologists and scientists began asking a provocative question: What if we could harness the body’s own immune system to fight cancer?
The idea had potential, but who had the courage to take the funding risk?
Long-term, mission-driven nonprofits stepped up with the seed funding. We had an ask in return, share the findings publicly so that the information can foster faster progress and collaboration.
These high-risk investments from the non-profit community helped lay the groundwork for a new generation of cancer treatments. In the 2010s, immunotherapies began receiving FDA approvals. Since then, the pace of progress has continued with advances in personalized medicine, cancer vaccines, gene therapy and more innovative approaches.
With today’s news of the collaborative incredible clinical trial results, we’re once again seeing what once seemed unimaginable.
And the nonprofit community is cheering.
Breakthroughs like these remind us that philanthropy is funding tomorrow’s possibilities.
Swim Across America is one of the nonprofits that has been part of this journey since the 1980s. Our mission remains as relevant today as it was then.
