Raymond Mailhot, Associate Professor at University of Miami, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I’m excited to share the news of our receipt of a $890,636 funding award from Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) for our application entitled Recognizing Educational Achievement in Children’s Health (REACH).
This work builds off prior data funded by the STATE OF FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH for which we were the first investigative team to link school data and medical data, respectively protected by FERPA and HIPAA. I’m thrilled that we at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center are going to bring that innovation even further.
Our project’s goal is to set a reproducible rubric for researchers who want to link scholastic performance to clinical data, allowing us to use school data as a metric for comparative effectiveness research. The majority of a child’s time awake is spent in school or school-activities, and we know that the school experience is important to patients and families.
Our work’s goal is to fill in these current gaps:
- Determine where scholastic performance data should be collected.
- Establish guidance for the labor and resources required to collect educational data.
- Create methods for combining school performance data across state lines.
- Identify which aspects of scholastic performance matter most and to whom.
I’m joined by an amazing investigative team including Drs. Carla L Fisher, Amy Crisp, Kim Raghubar, Christine Delgado and Erin Mobley. I’ve had incredible mentorship from Frank J. Penedo. Our team spans from UM, to University of Florida College of Medicine, to Baylor College of Medicine.
What makes this work extra special is PCORI’s valuing and our valuing of stakeholders. Two of my own former patients (and their families) are patient advocates. I’m so excited for what lies ahead!
