“Later this month, I’ll be heading to Hong Kong for the 2026 World Cancer Congress. a gathering that has always reminded me why global collaboration matters so deeply in cancer control.
The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) plays a unique role in our community: it brings together people who rarely share the same room but absolutely share the same mission: clinicians, researchers, policy makers, industry partners, advocates, and people with lived experience from every corner of the world.
For me, attending WCC is never just professional. It’s personal. It’s a chance to reconnect with colleagues who care about equity, access, and innovation as much as I do and to learn from countries that are pushing boundaries in prevention, early detection, treatment, and system design.
I’m also looking forward to our International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership (ICBP) highlight session, where John Butler and colleagues will explore how international benchmarking and quality indicators can drive real system reform. This work shows how comparative cancer data, when used well, can strengthen national cancer strategies, improve equity, and help health systems deliver better outcomes. It’s exactly the kind of evidence‑to‑action thinking our global community needs.
Cancer control advances when we listen to each other, challenge each other, and share what’s working. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of that conversation again this year, and I’m looking forward to the ideas, partnerships, and inspiration that always emerge from this congress.
