Rahul Banerjee, Assistant Professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and at the University of Washington, shared a post on X:
“Thanks Blood Cancer United (LLS) for interview re: MRD in blood cancers! Important in CML (led the way), AML, B-ALL, and MM.
I got my favorite soapbox statements in:
- Measurable (not minimal) more accurate for patients
- Goal: overturning Sutton’s Law
Why measurable (or molecular), not minimal?
- ‘Minimal’ assumes MRD is binary: it’s not, and details / sensitivity of assay matter to understand results
- Results not ‘minimal’ to patients if MRD status dictating transplant in B-ALL or MM
And re: Sutton’s Law (‘I check in the marrow because that’s where the tumors are’), better blood-based assays (outside of CML and CLL) hopefully coming soon!”
