Mark Lawler Campaigns For the “Right To Be Forgotten” for Cancer Survivors – Queen’s University Belfast

Queen’s University Belfast shared on LinkedIn:

“‘This is the proudest day in my professional career. The ‘Right to Be Forgotten’” is not about compassion – it is about generating quality evidence and acting on that evidence. What we have achieved is a significant win for cancer survivors in Ireland

Ireland is one of the first countries in Europe to immediately adopt the five-year eligibility, so that survivors can benefit from the legislation as quickly as possible.

‘Our success in Ireland makes me even more determined to ensure that we do the right thing and present the evidence to end this inexplicable discrimination against many of the 110,000 cancer survivors in Northern Ireland, as the first step to embedding the ‘Right To Be Forgotten’ right across the UK. Cancer knows no borders, neither should we.’ (Professor Mark Lawler, Professor of Digital Health at Queen’s University)

For the last five years, Professor Mark Lawler has campaigned both in Ireland and across Europe, to develop and present the research and evidence to embed the ‘Right To Be Forgotten‘ legislation into law and protect cancer survivors being discriminated against financially based on a previous cancer diagnosis.

Yesterday, he welcomed an announcement from the Irish Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Robert Troy TD, of a significant change in legislation which will see cancer survivors in Ireland be legally protected from such discrimination.”
