Understanding Breast Cancer: A Critical Step in Patient Navigation

As part of our Women Empowering Women Project, our Patient Navigation Training placed strong emphasis on understanding breast cancer, because effective navigation begins with knowledge.

Each cancer journey is unique. Breast cancer is different from prostate, cervical, colon cancers, in how it presents, progresses, and is treated. Navigating a patient effectively requires a clear understanding of these differences.

In Nigeria, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, often due to late detection and barriers to timely care. This reality underscores the urgent need for informed, patient-centered support systems, a big gap we want to bridge through our patient navigation training.

To address this, Dr. Uchechukwu Shagaya, Clinical and Radiation Oncologist at National Hospital Abuja, led a powerful session breaking down breast cancer in a way that equips navigators for real-world impact.

From recognizing early symptoms and promoting screening, to understanding diagnosis, treatment pathways, hospital processes, lifestyle adjustments, and the financial realities patients face, this session highlighted that navigation is not a single step, but a continuum of care. Because to truly support a patient, you must understand every stage of the journey.

At Project PINK BLUE, we are committed to building navigators who are not only compassionate but informed, equipped, and ready to guide.”
