Priyam Bordoloi: Recognizing the Early Warning Signs of Blood Cancer

Priyam Bordoloi, MD Internal Medicine Resident, shared on X:

Blood cancers have dangerously high mortality rates because their early symptoms are incredibly vague. Patients brush them off until it’s detected far too late. I want you to know the 5 silent red flags you cannot ignore.

1. Drenching night sweats.

I don’t mean feeling a little warm in a hot room. I mean waking up with your clothes and bedsheets completely soaked, requiring a change. In my Medicine wards, this is a classic, deeply overlooked red flag for Lymphoma.

2. Bone-crushing fatigue.

Not the ‘I worked a 24-hour shift’ tiredness. This is profound exhaustion that doesn’t improve with sleep. When leukemia crowds out healthy red blood cells in your bone marrow, severe anemia follows.

3. Unexplained bruising and bleeding.

  • Finding random large bruises without any trauma?
  • Gums bleeding heavily?
  • Pinpoint red dots on your legs?

As an internal medicine resident, I actively look for these on rounds. It is a major sign your platelets are dropping dangerously low.

4. Painless swollen lymph nodes.

A painful swollen lymph node usually just means your body is fighting a local infection. But a hard, rubbery, PAINLESS lump in your neck, armpit, or groin that won’t shrink? That is a major warning sign.

5. Recurrent, stubborn infections.

Constantly getting fevers or severe chest/skin infections that antibiotics can’t seem to clear? In blood cancer, your white blood cells might be rapidly multiplying, but they are completely dysfunctional. Your immune system is blind.

To be clear: ‘Blood cancer’ isn’t one entity. It’s a composite of several cancers, each with distinct symptoms. I have just listed the general, common ones here. Having them doesn’t mean you have cancer, but please do not ignore them.
