Prisca Githuka: What Does 1 Dollar Mean To The Person Living Through Cancer?

Prisca Githuka, Cancer Advocate, Founder of Pink Hearts Cancer Support Foundation, shared on LinkedIn:

What Could One Dollar Buy?

We often talk about cancer in terms of big numbers, and that is okay…

  • The cost of medicines.
  • The cost of surgery.
  • The cost of chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
  • The cost of building and equipping health facilities.

But what does one dollar mean to the person living through cancer?

In Kenya, one dollar could contribute towards transport to a clinic, something nutritious to eat, a phone call to follow up on care, or another small but necessary part of the cancer journey.

These may seem like small things.

For someone going through cancer, they may not be.

This is why I find the NCD Alliance’s ‘What Could One Dollar Buy?’ conversation so important.

Financing NCDs isn’t only about what appears in a health budget.

It is also about what that investment makes possible in a person’s everyday life.

There is also another side to the conversation: What we invest in prevention today can help reduce the burden of disease and the costs of care tomorrow.

As a cancer survivor and advocate, I want to bring this conversation down to the level where it matters most: the person.

So, in your context: What could one dollar buy?

What would US$1 mean to someone living with an NCD where you are?”
