The Burden of Prior Authorization: Calls for Reform to Protect Patient Care

The medical community is calling attention to the challenges of prior authorization, stressing the importance of timely, transparent decisions to ensure patients receive the care they need.

Mark Lewis, Director of Gastrointestinal Oncology at Intermountain Healthcare in Utah, shared a post on X:

“On behalf of the Society of Utah Medical Oncology, speaking to legislators about reforming the prior authorization process, which needs as much timeliness and transparency as access to the medical record itself – patients deserve to know when and why their meds are denied vs. approved.”

Udhayvir Grewal, Resident Physician at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, shared a post on X:

“So frustrated at the prior authorization process.

I feel helpless because I am being asked to reason with a physician who isn’t even an oncologist and convince them that my patient deserves to have a potentially life-saving therapy. It’s so frustrating to see my patient decline as we try to fight and reason with their insurance provider.

We need to do better.”

American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons shared a post on X:

“As physicians, you understand firsthand how prior authorization delays can:

  • Increase operational costs
  • Reduce time with patients
  • Regularly delay or prevent care
