Preetam Jain, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Director at OncoWorld Cancer Centre, shared on X:
”At the beginning, he asked me:
‘Doctor, how long do I have?’
A few months later, he stopped asking about survival.
Instead:
- ‘Can I attend my daughter’s birthday?’
- ‘Can I travel with my wife?’
- ‘Can I go back to work?’
- ‘Can I eat at my favorite restaurant?’
Something had changed. He had stopped measuring life in months. He had started measuring it in moments. That is something cancer teaches us that statistics never can.
As oncologists, we fight for survival. But we should also fight for the life inside those extra days. Because adding years to life matters. But adding life to those years matters too.”
