Phoebe Ongadi: Why Africa Needs a Home-Grown HTA Network?

Phoebe Ongadi, Executive Director at Kenyan Network of Cancer Organizations, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I am grateful to have spent a few enriching days in Istanbul, Türkiye, participating in the HTAi 2026 Annual Meeting. It was a valuable opportunity to engage with global and regional leaders in Health Technology Assessment and to contribute to the session on: “HTAfrica Network at HTAi: Regional Bridges for Economic Stability, Strengthening Equity, and Sustainability of Healthcare in Africa.”

During the session, I shared reflections from a Kenyan perspective on the importance of developing a home-grown HTA network for Africa. Such a network is essential for ensuring that healthcare decisions are informed by local disease burdens, health-system realities, resource constraints and patient experiences/perspectives.

My sincere appreciation to PCIG PASS Program, Fiona Pearce, HTAi Board of Directors led by Ann Single, HTAi secretariat led by George Valiotis, the organizers, fellow speakers, participants, and partners for the rich discussions, shared learning, and commitment to strengthening equitable and sustainable healthcare systems across Africa. Social Health Authority Benefits Package and Tarrifs Advisory used HTA for the enhanced oncology package process.”
