Peter Slavin: Can Prehabilitation Improve Surgical Outcomes for Patients With IBD?

Peter Slavin, President and CEO of Cedars-Sinai, shared on LinkedIn:

“Cedars-Sinai welcomed a team from Sheba Medical Center in Israel this week as part of our collaboration to improve surgical outcomes for patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Our work together builds on the IBD Prehabilitation Program pioneered at Cedars-Sinai under the leadership of Gil Y. Melmed, clinical director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program. The 10-week program prepares patients for surgery through tailored dietary, mental health and physical therapy support before and after an operation. Participants at Cedars-Sinai saw a significant reduction in complications, 30-day readmissions and repeat surgeries, and they required less opioid medication for pain.

Earlier this year, a $1.8 million grant from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust made it possible to bring this approach to hospitals in Israel, starting with Sheba, the country’s largest.

The visiting team included department chair, Dr. Shomron Ben Horin; IBD division leader, Dr. Uri Kopylov, and colorectal surgeon, Dr. Dean Lutrin. They were joined by a nurse, dietitian, physical therapist, psychologist and program coordinators. Together with our teams, they reviewed progress on our shared research, observing clinical care, comparing processes and outcomes across our health systems and discussing future collaboration. Our trainees also gained valuable time with these visiting physicians.

Thank you to the Sheba team for joining us and to Dr. Melmed and his colleagues for leading this work on behalf of patients living with IBD.”
