“After 12 years of dedicated service, we’re proud to acknowledge Lorey Smith, who is stepping down as Co-Chair of Peter Mac’s Research Gender Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (RGEDI) Committee.
Dr Smith joined the committee when it was established in 2014 as the Gender Equity Committee, helping drive meaningful action to address the loss of women from research careers at the mid-career stage and beyond. Under her leadership as Co-Chair, the committee evolved into the RGEDI Committee in 2021, broadening its focus to support researchers impacted by discrimination, bias and intersectionality.
Alongside her outstanding contributions as a researcher, Dr Smith has championed initiatives including the Research Momentum grant scheme, centralised parental leave support for researchers, gender reporting across key research metrics, the annual Women in Science Symposium and Lea Medal presentation, and a range of diversity and inclusion working groups.
‘Throughout her time as Co-Chair, Dr Smith has led with integrity, vision and a genuine commitment to making a difference for our people,’ said Professor Ricky Johnstone, Executive Director of Cancer Research.
We thank Dr Smith for her leadership, advocacy and commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive research environment. Her impact will continue to be felt across Peter Mac for years to come.”
