“The care provided by pediatric oncology nurses is essential throughout the entire cancer treatment journey. But in many low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), nurses face difficult challenges that compromise their ability to save children’s lives.
Some of the challenges that nurses in LMICs encounter, which lead to worse outcomes for patients, include:
- Inadequate staffing is aligned with patient treatment complexity
- Lack of structured orientation for new pediatric oncology nurses
- Limited access to ongoing education and professional development
- Exclusion of nurses from decision-making, at the bedside, and in administration
- Insufficient resources to ensure effective pediatric nursing care
- Missing evidence-based nursing policies and locally relevant research (Source)
At ACT 4 Children, we’re working to improve conditions for nurses in LMICs, which in turn leads to improved outcomes for childhood cancer patients. We help with specialized education, yearlong training, workplace infrastructure, career pathways, evidence-based guidelines, and more for nurses in need of support.
Follow us to show your support for nurses and the crucial role they play in saving the lives of children with cancer!”
