“As cancer survival rates continue to improve, the long-term effects of treatment on survivorship and quality of life are gaining increasing attention. One such concern is bone health in patients receiving systemic therapy. Pleased to share our new publication in Supportive Care in Cancer, grateful to my co-authors and collaborating centers. A Multi-Center Prospective Matched Comparative Study on Osteoporosis Risk in Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy. In this multi-center study of 514 participants, we compared chemotherapy-treated cancer patients with matched healthy controls:
Osteoporosis risk was 6.8 times higher in cancer patients. Lumbar BMD was 26.2% lower, and femur BMD 9.2% lower.
Our results highlight the need for routine bone health monitoring and early preventive measures in oncology practice.”
