Omar Abdihamid: World Cancer Day at Garissa Regional Cancer Centre Highlights Access, Dignity, and Care Closer to Home

Omar Abdihamid, Clinical Oncologist at Shabaha Cancer Centre and Clinical Oncology Specialist at HCGCCK Cancer Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“On World Cancer Day, we heard powerful testimonies and received meaningful feedback from our communities at the Garissa Regional Cancer Centre (GRCC)—one of the few regional cancer centres serving more than 11 counties across Eastern, Upper Eastern, and Northern Kenya. (YouTube)

Since its inception in 2023, GRCC has cared for over 2,000 cancer patients, including more than 500 who have received radiotherapy using modern Varian TrueBeam techniques. This is a service that was previously unavailable to many of our patients and their families—often requiring long-distance travel, major costs, and significant disruption to care.

Hearing from cancer warriors who have completed treatment and are now in remission was deeply moving. Their journeys highlighted what truly matters: timely access, dignity, affordability, and care closer to home—made possible in part through the support of the Social Health Authority, Elias Melly, Ministry of Health, Kenya, Mary Nyangasi-Onyango, Hafsa Wanja, AORTIC- Africa.
