Olubukola Ayodele: How To Support T-Cells In Fighting Cancer

Olubukola Ayodele, Breast Cancer Lead at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Our immune system works hard every day to keep us well, and T cells play a central role in spotting and destroying cancer cells. These cells are trained in the thymus, a small organ behind the breastbone that ‘educates’ immature cells and releases the ones able to recognise threats.

The challenge is that the thymus naturally shrinks with age, which slows down new T-cell production, which is why increasing age is a risk factor for cancer. Research also shows that chronic inflammation, poor diet and long-term stress speed up this decline. Studies show that healthier habits can help preserve thymic function and support a stronger immune response.

A balanced diet matters because the thymus relies on several nutrients for normal development and T-cell maturation. Evidence supports the role of adequate protein, omega-3 fats, vitamins A, C, D and zinc in supporting immune cell growth. Regular, moderate exercise has also been shown to reduce systemic inflammation and improve T-cell activity, while very intense, prolonged training can have the opposite effect. Good sleep, reduced alcohol intake and stopping smoking also support lower inflammation levels.

While lifestyle changes do not ‘prevent cancer’ on their own, they help maintain a healthier immune system, which is one part of our body’s defence.

Practical steps we ALL can take include:

  • Eating a varied, nutrient-rich diet
  • Engaging in moderate activity such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming
  • Prioritising sleep
  • Managing stress through breathing exercises, mindfulness or social support
  • Avoiding tobacco and limiting alcohol

Small, consistent habits make a difference. Supporting your immune system is an investment in long-term health, and your T cells will thank you for it.

Share with your loved ones and community!”
