Olubukola Ayodele: Joins Key Stakeholders at the National Cancer Plan Inequalities Roundtable

Olubukola Ayodele, Breast Cancer Lead at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Last week, I was invited by the Department of Health and Social Care to join key stakeholders at the National Cancer Plan Inequalities Roundtable.

The discussions centred on three vital themes:
  1. Working with communities and empowering individuals.
  2. Delivering equitable care across the pathway.
  3. Inclusive research, clinical trials, and data equity.

What stood out to me was the DHSC’s clear commitment to placing inequalities at the heart of the national cancer plan, rather than treating it as an afterthought. Inequalities in cancer care are not the responsibility of a small group; it is everyone’s business.

The focus on tangible solutions and measurable outcomes was especially important. It’s not enough to acknowledge the gaps; we must act on them in ways that communities can feel and measure.

Grateful to all the key stakeholders who were present, and new connections were made on the day.

A special commendation to Steven McIntosh, Chief Partnership Officer at Macmillan Cancer Support, who chaired the meeting with great skill, ensuring all voices were heard. It was also encouraging to hear from Rob Stones, Director of Delivery for Cancer at NHS England, who committed to collating our input and presenting it to the Health Secretary, Wes Streeting.

I left the meeting grateful for the rich and diverse contributions, and hopeful for what lies ahead. Building a system that reflects co-design, co-production, and co-delivery is essential if we are to achieve meaningful and lasting change.

As we look forward, the principles of the 10-year health plan must be fully integrated into this work. A future where every patient, regardless of background, has access to equitable cancer care is within reach but only if we continue to listen, collaborate, and act with intention.”
