“Yesterday was special. I stepped out for my first public outing since surgery, and it was worth every moment to celebrate my sister and friend, Leanne Pero MBE, on the 7th anniversary of Black Women Rising UK (BWR).
We gathered in London for an intimate VIP luncheon with allies and friends of BWR. Sitting in that room, I couldn’t help but reflect on what can happen when one woman dares to challenge the status quo. What began seven years ago as Leanne’s vision has grown into a powerful movement: a thriving community of over 750 members, raising more than £1 million to support women affected by cancer. That is nothing short of extraordinary.
The afternoon was emotionally charged and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. The voices of women with lived experience filled the space with power, truth, and resilience. I was especially moved when tribute was paid to my dear friend Nina Lopes, who sadly passed away in November. Nina was a fierce advocate and unwavering supporter of BWR. Her legacy continues to shine through the work and love she poured into this cause.
We were privileged to hear from Dr Georgette Oni, who delivered a compelling keynote speech reminding us why this work matters: the poorer outcomes Black women face in cancer care are not acceptable, and we all share the responsibility to change the narrative.
For me, the afternoon was not just about celebration, but about recommitting to the mission. It was a reminder of the importance of standing together, sharing our stories, and advocating for better, fairer experiences for Black women in the UK.
I also cherished the chance to spend time with so many remarkable people who, like me, are passionate about driving change.
Seven years of BWR is a testament to resilience, vision, and community. But the journey continues. We will keep pushing for equity, amplifying the voices of women too often unheard, and ensuring that no Black woman faces cancer without the support, recognition, and care she deserves.
Here’s to Leanne, to Nina, to every woman who has shared her story, and to the allies walking alongside us. The work continues, and together we will make a difference.”
