Oliver Bogler: The Career Advice Nobody Gives You in Academic Science

Oliver Bogler, Chief Executive Officer of Night Science Institute and Strategic Advisor at Barnacle Labs, shared on LinkedIn:

The career advice nobody gives you in academic science:

Apply protection before you need it.

This applies to sunscreen. It also applies to thinking clearly about your career before you’re in the middle of a funding crisis, a leadership transition, or a year three post-tenure identity question with no map and a full clinical or teaching load.

The scientists I work with who navigate mid-career most effectively aren’t the ones who waited until things were urgent. They’re the ones who used the slower moments – summer, a gap between grants, the odd quiet week – to ask the harder questions from a clear head.

Urgency is a terrible advisor. Clarity is better. Summer is one of the few times you might have access to it.

Don’t waste it entirely on the laptop by the pool.

(The laptop by the pool, though – I understand. I’ve been there).”
