NSW Health shared on LinkedIn:
“The winner of the 2026 Health Innovation Award is: Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Breast Cancer Screening from the Cancer Institute NSW.
BreastScreen NSW is the first population-based breast screening program in Australia to use AI to safely support radiologists reviewing mammograms.
The technology reduces radiologist workload and false-positive recalls, improving efficiency and reducing wait times and anxiety for patients.

Megan Varlow, Director Cancer Screening and Prevention at Cancer Institute NSW, added:
“Last night BreastScreen NSW won the 2026 Health Innovation Award for the project Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Breast Cancer Screening.
This project has been many years in the making and a very collaborative effort from multiple teams across the Cancer Institute NSW, eHealth NSW and Local Health Districts.
Led by the fabulous Matthew Warner-Smith and Dr Nalini Bhola, and supported by a Clinical Advisory Group including some of the most senior and experienced radiologists in NSW, this project has measurably improved outcomes and positioned NSW as a global leader in the responsible adoption of AI in healthcare.
Congratulations to every single person who contributed along the way with a special shout out to Matthew, Nalini, my predecessor Sarah McGill, and the Clinical Advisory Group members.
Without their leadership we would not be in this position today.”
