Norman Ng: Honored to Recieve Hutchmed’s 5-Year Long Service Award

Norman Ng, Director of Patient Advocacy and Public Affairs at Healthcare Thinkers, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Five Years at Hutchmed: Not Just a Career, But a Blessed Life Journey.

Receiving Hutchmed’s 5-Year Long Service Award means far more than professional recognition. It is not just a milestone marking five years of employment, but an extraordinary, grace-filled life journey that reshaped my identity, mission and outlook on life.

I joined Hutchmed in May 2021, eager to advance oncology innovation and deliver cutting-edge therapies to Hong Kong patients. Focused on pharmaceutical market access, I strove to connect innovative medicines with local healthcare systems for vulnerable patients – yet none foresaw how drastically life would shift.

Just 19 months after I started, in December 2022, I received a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis. This life-shattering news could have ended my career and dimmed my passion. But through God’s boundless grace, my illness did not pause my service; it redefined it.

Over these five years, I upheld my professional duties and patient advocacy amid ongoing health struggles. I led policy outreach and government lobbying to secure local access for fruquintinib. Leveraging Hong Kong’s 1+ innovative drug registration pathway, I helped register the therapy, and crucially, secured its special-status listing on the Hospital Authority Drug Formulary, unlocking a vital new treatment for local colorectal cancer patients.

Drawing from my own patient experience, I also founded and convene the Lung Cancer Patient Concern Group. As a patient advocate, I amplify patient voices, coordinate medical resources, push for public health education, and campaign for fairer treatment access and stronger patient support frameworks across Hong Kong.

None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of my Hutchmed family. I am endlessly grateful to every colleague who walked beside me, offering care and encouragement through my hardest days.

Special thanks go to my supervisor Ms Caron Li, who stood faithfully by my side throughout. Her empathy, trust, patience and guidance let me balance treatment, rest and work peacefully amid my cancer journey—one of my greatest blessings these past five years.

This award is far more than a career accolade; it is a precious testimony of surviving cancer. My role in market access granted me unique perspective and a platform to serve the public, transforming personal hardship into collective good for patients.

Faith, Hope and Love remain my enduring anchors:

Faith steadies me amid uncertainty; Hope brightens every hard day; Love wraps around me from God, my family and my Hutchmed family.

I give deepest thanks for God’s grace in my life. I will carry on with patient advocacy and keep striving to expand access to innovative medicines for Hong Kong patients.

I am grateful for every meeting, every hardship and every blessing these five years have brought.

Yours Sincerely,
Norman.”
