Niyobuhungiro Elysee, Founder and Executive director at IHCRI-Rwanda (Internal Health Cancer and Research Initiative Rwanda), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Not long ago, Susan Katuruza sat on the other side of the consultation room – not as the nurse, but as the patient.
A cancer diagnosis has a way of stopping time. For Susan, it changed everything – how she saw her work, her patients, and what it truly means to face uncertainty with courage.
Today, Susan is both a specialist renal nurse and a cancer survivor. She knows the weight of a diagnosis not only from the textbooks, but from lived experience – the fear, the treatment, the long road back to life.
Her story is one of resilience, of medicine seen from both sides of the bed, and of a healthcare professional whose care for patients was deepened by becoming one herself.
We are honoured to have her with us today.
