Niranjala Siriwardena, Cancer Survivor and Former Manager at PwC Australia, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I never imagined that sharing my story about cancer and work would reach 163,000 people. But it did.
434,276 impressions. 163,317 people reached. 2,219 followers.
In the past 8 months, my message about cancer + work has reached over 163,000 professionals on LinkedIn.
Many of them are Australians 🇦🇺 employees, leaders, HR teams, doctors, carers, survivors, and family members who saw their reality reflected in a conversation that is almost never spoken about publicly.
This isn’t just a metric.
It’s proof of a silent demand for change.
Every week, thousands of working Australians are diagnosed with cancer. Most quickly discover there is no system, no framework, and no clear protection when treatment and work collide.
The engagement on this topic tells me three things with certainty:
- People are ready to talk
- Workplaces are not ready to respond
- A national workplace cancer survivorship policy is no longer optional
To every person who read, shared, saved, commented, or reached out privately – thank you for giving this issue visibility.
This is how change starts: one voice – then thousands – then a system.
This isn’t a moment. It’s the beginning of real change for survivors in the workplace.”
