Nicole Stout, Senior Director Survivorship and Wellness at American Cancer Society, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“What an exceptional panel discussion to reflect on 3 decades of Clinical Innovation and Impact articulated by past Maley Awardees last week at American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
The message is more pressing that ever;
70% of individuals with cancer will survive at least 5 years and longevity among survivors is increasing.
>60% experience treatment-related side effects that prohibit them from fully participating in or returning to life roles.
Early Intervention with supportive services like rehabilitation and exercise mitigate the negative consequences of treatment on function.
We need to reframe our approach towards risk stratified, prospective surveillance. Everyone going through cancer treatment needs something, but that something changes throughout the continuum; repeated screening and early identification of emerging impairment helps us to be proactive rather than reactive in cancer care.”
